We are JUNGL, an environment friendly brand that has been established to offer a sustainable alternative. From an early age, we (Anouschka and Natascha Hendriks) have been working on sustainability and we have discovered that the impact of fashion and textiles on the environment is huge. By offering a sustainable swimwear collection, whereby the environmental impact is kept as small as possible, we hope to be able to reduce this negative impact.
Every bikini or swimsuit is named after a marine animal that is threatened with extinction. The main reasons for the threat are overfishing and the plastic waste that floats in the oceans. 46% of the weight of the plastic soup consists of fishing nets. Marine animals get entangled in these nets and suffer a painful death. In August 2018, three hundred dead threatened sea turtles were found at the coast of Mexico after being tangled in a fishing net. This is one of the reasons that we use the fabric from the Slovenian company ECONYL®, which is made from fishing nets and other nylon waste.
Most (bath) fashion is unfortunately still produced under bad working conditions. This usually happens in Asia, but also in countries closer to the Netherlands such as Romania and Albania. We have searched a long time for a transparent producer who is committed to the environment and guarantees good working conditions for her employees. We ended up at Ecovest in Portugal. This factory is GOTS and SMETA certified, which are the highest possible certificates. The factory only has LED lighting and has solar panels on the roof.
We consider honesty, sustainability, quality and transparency to be very important. Sustainability is reflected in all aspects of our company. For example, the transport is only by truck, the packaging is recycled and we bring the packages to the shipping service by bicycle.
Our designs are timeless and we ensure that we do not go along with fast fashion. Slow fashion is the future and we would like to contribute to this. Products can be worn longer if the quality is good. ECONYL® yarn is 100% recycled nylon yarn from fishing nets and other nylon waste. This fabric is twice as resistant to chlorine, sunscreen and solar oil as normal swimwear fabric, so the products will stay beautiful and you can enjoy them longer.
By using recycled materials and to make sure that the production will take place under fair working conditions, we want to offer consumers an alternative to the polluting fashion that is offered by many brands and stores. We also want to make people aware of the plastic problem and the poor working conditions under which fashion is often produced. Besides the production and sales of swimwear, we also give lessons to schools about the plastic problem.
A bikini can’t solve everything, but it’s a good start!
